A special kind of domain extensions is called TLD or top level domains. It is common to see both names when you surf the web. In order to get a grasp of these domains you should learn something more about normal domains on the Internet.

Internet Domain Names

Internet domain names are most often used to give names to certain web sites and various server that are located on the Internet. The thing that manages these names is something called DNS or Domain Name System. In order to more efficiently manage these names the Domain Name System uses multi level strings that are separated by using dots.

Maybe an example will help you (for example computers.mma.edu). You will see that this site uses three naming levels. These name levels are listed as being from the lowest one to the highest one. Here you see that the first name stands for a concrete web site, the second one stands for the organization part and the third one is a general TLD.TLD

TLDs - Common Domain Extensions

When you think about the most used and often seen TLD is .com. But, there are a lot more than .com. There are 6 different TLDs and down below you will see them listed.

  • .org
  • .edu
  • .net
  • .int
  • .mil
  • .gov

These were the top level domains that were originally used when the Internet appeared, but since then many new top level domains appeared. They vary greatly as some of them are used in a very restricted fashion and some are used all around the world. You probably haven't seen some of these top level domains, but be sure that they exist and are being used all the time.
