That the Ultrabook format is not so firmly designed can be seen in the Toshiba U840W, meant primarily to movie lovers. Such format of a screen we didn't see before.
If we start the story with a 14.4" diagonal screen, you probably expect another light business Ultrabook. It is light, with only 1.7 kg, but the expanded format of the screen will surprise you. Namely, it's resolution is 1792x768 pixels, so the aspect rose from the usually 16:9 (1.78:1) to 21:9 (2.33:1), and all of that just to make the Toshiba U840W an excellent platform to watch movies on, they way real movie lovers like it – in the famous CinemaScope format.
To tell the truth, CinemaScope is not the marking for format, but a way of recording wide images on the standard 35 mm film, but CinemaScope format generally can be called a movie from any aspect
In the case of the Toshiba computer the aspect is 21:9 (or 2.33:1) which will stretch almost every movie across the entire screen. Almost every, because there are always exceptions, such as the famous movie “Ben Hur” whose original version will have tapes above and below the image because it was filmed on a special 65mm film with 2.76:1 aspect.
We are talking about the particularities, because before buying this computer you have to be aware that this is a device of special characteristics and that it is a question how will it work a general purpose machine. Generally, in graphic and related programs the option to open extra pallets and work menus will feel good. You could say that in Excel you will have a good view, but the keyboard doesn't have the special numeric part that is often necessary to work in tables.
In return, the space from the edges of the keyboard to the edges of the computer is filled with big Harman Kardon speakers that recommend this computer even more as a personal movie station. On the other hand is the fact that a 14.4" diagonal is a bit small for serious movie enjoyment and that enjoying yourself in company is often disturbed by the built in TN screen.
The screen is namely, very good, but in the limits that TN technology allows – don't expect good visibility from the sides, and the colors won't be the same as when you are in front of the screen.
